The Power of Place Roadshow isn’t your average film screening — it’s an experience. It’s culture. It’s community. It’s a celebration of excellence, belonging, and Black brilliance.

We will screen two powerful films:

Dear Young Black Portland

This intimate portrait centers on Ms. Sharon Gary-Smith, a beloved elder and former NAACP Portland President. In a raw, deeply personal letter to the next generation, she shares the story of her family losing their home to eminent domain. Her voice is fierce, vulnerable, and overflowing with wisdom — a rallying cry to the young people rising up today.

Her story becomes the bridge to…

Where We Goin: Power of Place

This film follows Intisar Abioto, a multidisciplinary artist who in 2022 launched a visionary campaign to purchase the historic home of civil rights pioneer Beatrice Morrow Cannady. After raising $1 million, Intisar doesn’t stop — she curates the first all-Black Oregon artist exhibition at the Portland Art Museum, celebrating Black creativity, memory, and legacy.

Together, these stories unfold into the broader movement for reclamation and vision through Albina Vision Trust, which is leading one of the largest redevelopment projects in U.S. history—reimagining what Black home and belonging can look like in Portland.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of film, dialogue, and community.

We’re thrilled to host the Power of Place Roadshow—a film-centered, multimedia experience that invites deep reflection and bold vision. Through two powerful short films, interactive dialogue, and live music, this event is a space to witness stories of loss, reclamation, and the future of Black belonging.
