OJF in Action at 2025 Housing Opportunity Day

On Wednesday, April 30th, Our Just Future sent an advocate to the Oregon State Capitol in Salem to lobby for continued support for affordable housing. They joined over 175 advocates from across the state for Housing Opportunity Day and met with legislators and staff to push for urgent, life-sustaining investments in affordable housing.

Our collective message was clear: Without immediate and substantial funding, Oregon risks losing the ground we’ve fought so hard to gain in housing stability. We focused on three critical funding priorities:

  • $680 million for LIFT and permanent supportive housing
  • $285 million to preserve affordable rental housing
  • $109.7 million for rent assistance

Our advocacy team brought diverse expertise spanning housing policy, community development, and personal experience of housing insecurity and homelessness. In every meeting, we emphasized the human cost of delay. Stories from those with lived experience helped center the conversation where it belongs: on the people most impacted.

We know that advocacy isn’t a one-day event. It’s a continuous effort to ensure every Oregonian has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. We’re proud to be part of that work—and even prouder to be building momentum alongside such committed allies.

🎥 Watch our recap video to see what the day looked like in action and why this work matters now more than ever.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. Call or Email Your Legislators
A short, personal message makes a big difference. Let your state representatives know you support increased funding for affordable housing, rent assistance, and permanent supportive housing. Mention why it matters to you or your community.

2. Spread the Word—And Help Fund the Fight
Share our recap video and speak out on social media about why housing justice matters. If you’re able, consider making a donation to support our advocacy efforts. Every dollar helps us keep the pressure on—and keep people housed.

3. Join a Local Advocacy Group
Get connected with housing justice coalitions or nonprofits in your area. These groups often organize campaigns, send action alerts, and coordinate lobby days so your voice is amplified as part of a collective effort.

Behind the Numbers: A Snapshot of Our Impact

This spring, we’re taking a moment to pause and reflect on what the numbers are telling us—not just about need, but about action. Our 2025 Impact Brief is a snapshot of the progress we’ve made so far this fiscal year, the challenges our communities continue to face, and the collective efforts required to build a more just future.

At Our Just Future, we believe that stable housing is the foundation for health, safety, and opportunity. But as this brief shows, housing is just the tip of the iceberg.

Since the start of the fiscal year, we’ve worked with more than 5,300 individuals, including nearly 1,800 children. This number includes the 2,375 families who accessed our utility assistance programs to keep the lights on and avoid eviction. And it includes the 185 participants in our career support programs—101 of whom increased their income by 50% or more through new employment.

We’re proud of our teams who do the hard work of direct support, planning, building, and creating this uniquely holistic environment. But it isn’t easy, and it doesn’t happen in isolation. From volunteer-led meal prep to multi-year housing development projects, every milestone we reach is the result of deep community collaboration and investment.

Construction is now underway at Legin Commons, our newest affordable housing community in Southeast Portland. When complete, it will bring our total number of affordable housing units to 1,024. These homes offer long-term stability for families who have too often been priced out of Portland’s housing market.

It really does take a village.

Each of these numbers tells a story. The story of a family moving from shelter to permanent housing. The story of a single parent finding a job that pays well enough to support their children. The story of neighbors showing up with meals, care, and commitment.

We invite you to read the full 2025 Impact Brief (PDF) and reflect with us on what it takes to create real, lasting change.

While the headlines often focus on what’s broken, our story is about what’s being built.

A Holistic, Community-Based Approach to Homelessness

Portland’s housing crisis is visible everywhere you look. It is hard to witness the level of homelessness and housing insecurity happening in our area. And how much harder, still, to be among those trying to survive the crisis on the street, in their car, or in a shelter. It is painful to acknowledge that there is no quick fix when so many people are suffering. The causes are complex and the solutions are not so simple, either.

What heartens us here at Our Just Future are the incredible people who engage with our programs. To have the opportunity to be part of their progress is what drives us forward as an organization. Despite the ongoing and heartbreaking crisis on our streets, we see success every day when the folks in our programs achieve career advancement, housing stability, and long-term economic security.

East Portland and wider East Multnomah County are special places with amazing diversity. This area has been under-resourced for decades, and residents have fewer resources than in other parts of the Portland area. While housing is the core of our work that most people are familiar with, we partner with folks seeking services in other ways, too.

Here are just a few of our programs that support people in our community:

  • We help unsheltered folks find and settle into stable housing. Roughly 285 people stay in our three shelters on any given night. Our team works with every resident to find their way back to stable housing they can afford for the long term. We’re proud that 80% of program participants remain housed for at least 12 months.
  • We build affordable housing in our region to increase the supply, which is tens of thousands of units too low. This under-supply of housing is a main cause of the housing crisis—in Portland and across the nation. Our current development will open in 2026 with 124 units, bringing the total number of affordable apartments we own and operate to 1,020 residences.
  • We coach job seekers toward living-wage work. Our career coaches help folks who face more barriers than most—such as individuals with a justice background, no job history and/or homelessness. When we pair short-term rent assistance with job training, people can finally begin to thrive!
  • We work with families to stay housed so their elementary-age kids can consistently attend the same school, which is so important for their mental health and academic success. When kids change schools often—which happens when parents lose their housing—learning and relationships suffer. Our approach keeps kids connected to a single school and existing support system.

These, along with other supportive services and trauma-informed care, form the foundation of Our Just Future’s holistic approach to creating change. While our shelters and rental assistance programs address the symptoms of systemic poverty and injustice, our many other programs target the root causes of homelessness. Ultimately, our programs work to prevent homelessness for vulnerable individuals.

As our city and nation face extraordinary change in the coming months and years, we strongly believe this holistic, trauma-informed approach to community care will be even more critically important in creating a more just future for everyone.

👋  Will you help support our efforts to keep more East Portland neighbors safely housed? Every donation helps!
