Jo Ann Hardesty

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi

I hope you are free on Thursday evening, October 1st, so you can learn with us about a topic we are passionate about at Human Solutions: becoming antiracist. And why not deepen your understanding of this critical concept with the brilliant Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and local superpower and Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty?

When we first approached Dr. Kendi to speak at our now annual Think Big event, we thought he would be here with us in person in East Multnomah County, where we focus our work. Not only were we wrong about that, we also did not predict that the Black Lives Matter movement would experience renewed urgency this spring and summer, catapulting Dr. Kendi’s brilliant and inspiring book, How to Be an Antiracist, to the tippy top of the New York Times Best Seller list.

For the Human Solutions team, this moment is both tragic and hopeful. Tragic because COVID is inequitably harming the people we work with in East Multnomah County, who were already working hard to survive poverty and structural racism. Hopeful because more people are seeing and actively working to dismantle the inequitable and racist systems that make and keep people poor. It feels like there is light in the darkness.

This free event is an invitation to understand and embrace antiracism. Here are the details:
